About reading practice

Reading comprehension is the ability to understand, remember and think about what you read. These passages follow what students typically read at each stage: short stories and simple science in the early grades, longer fiction and history in the middle grades, and arguments, essays and science writing for high school and adults.

Every passage practises the question types used on most reading tests: main idea, details, vocabulary in context, inference, sequence and author’s purpose. Learn strategies for each in our free reading skills course.

Frequently asked questions

How does reading practice work?

Pick a grade, read the passage (or press “Read it to me”), learn the words to know, then answer four questions. You get instant feedback with an explanation for each answer.

Which grade should my child start with?

Start with their school grade. If they get every question right, try the next grade; if they miss two or more, try the grade below. The level check does this for you.

Are the passages original?

Yes. Every passage and question is written by Pagine for practice. They are not taken from any official test.

Is it free?

Yes, reading online is free with no sign-up. Printing asks for a free Pagine account.

Make reading a daily habit

Comprehension grows with every book. Track reading with streaks and badges in the free Pagine app.
