Maya’s Garden

🖨️ Print this passage

Maya wanted to grow her own food. Grandma gave her a small patch of dirt by the fence.

First, Maya pulled out the weeds. Next, she planted tomato and bean seeds in neat rows. Every morning she watered them with her yellow can.

For two weeks, nothing happened. Maya almost gave up. Then one day she saw tiny green sprouts poking out of the soil!

By summer, Maya had bright red tomatoes. She shared them with her neighbors, who said they were the best tomatoes on the street.

Why Do Leaves Change Color?

🖨️ Print this passage

In summer, most leaves are green. They are full of a green material called chlorophyll. Chlorophyll helps the tree make food from sunlight.

In fall, the days get shorter and colder. Trees stop making as much chlorophyll. As the green fades, other colors that were hiding in the leaf start to show: yellow and orange.

Some trees, like maples, also make new red and purple colors in the fall.

Soon the leaves drop to the ground, and the tree rests for the winter.
