The Contest Poem

Ana wrote her poem for the city contest in one night, crossing out more words than she kept. It was about her grandmother’s hands — how they kneaded bread, braided hair and held hers when she was scared of the dark.

When the winners were announced, her name wasn’t on the list. She stuffed the poem into her backpack and didn’t take it out for a week.

Then her grandmother found it while looking for a pencil. She read it twice, very slowly, and her eyes filled with tears. "Nobody ever told me my hands were worth writing about," she said.

Ana realized the poem had already reached the only reader who mattered. She taped it to the refrigerator, right above the bread box.
