Two Gardens

Mrs. Chen’s garden was a picture from a magazine: neat rows, trimmed hedges, not a single weed. Mr. Ruiz’s garden next door was a wild jungle of sunflowers, squash vines and buzzing bees.

For years they did not speak. Mrs. Chen thought his garden was a mess. Mr. Ruiz thought hers was boring.

Then one summer, Mrs. Chen’s tomatoes produced almost no fruit. "Not enough bees," said the expert at the garden center. "You need flowers that attract pollinators."

That evening, Mrs. Chen knocked on Mr. Ruiz’s door holding a jar of jam. "I hear you know a lot about bees," she said. By next summer, a row of sunflowers stood along the fence between them — on both sides.

1. How are the two gardens different?
2. Why did Mrs. Chen’s tomatoes fail?
3. Why does Mrs. Chen bring jam?
4. What do the sunflowers on both sides of the fence symbolize?
Theme: What lesson or message does the story share? Use a detail.
Answer key: 1) one is neat and orderly, the other is wild with flowers and bees · 2) not enough bees to pollinate them · 3) to make peace and ask Mr. Ruiz for help · 4) friendship and cooperation between the neighbors · Theme: Different ways of doing things can each have value; cooperation helps everyone.
