The Inventor’s Notebook

Grandma Lucia kept a notebook full of inventions that never worked: a self-buttering toaster, a hat that watered plants, a bicycle that pedaled itself downhill (which, she admitted, was just a bicycle).

"Why do you keep all your failures?" asked Nico, flipping through the smudged pages.

"They aren’t failures," she said. "They’re maps. Each one shows me a road that doesn’t go anywhere, so I don’t have to walk it twice."

On the last page was a drawing of a simple clip that held a phone to a bicycle handlebar. Beside it, in Grandma’s handwriting, was the word "PATENTED" and a date from thirty years ago. "That one paid for your mother’s college," Grandma said, smiling. "It took forty-two maps to find it."

1. What kinds of inventions are in the notebook?
