Ice Night

The power had been out for two days when Dad said the words I never expected: "We’re out of firewood."

Outside, every branch was wrapped in ice, glittering like it had been dipped in glass. It was beautiful and dangerous at the same time. We could hear trees cracking in the woods, sharp as gunshots.

Then came a knock. Our neighbor, Mr. Halvorsen, who was eighty years old and never said more than "morning," stood there with a wheelbarrow full of split logs. "Heard you were running low," he said.

That night we cooked soup on the woodstove and invited him to stay. He told stories about the ice storm of 1998 until the candles burned down. I learned more about my neighbor in one night than in eleven years.
