The Last Day of Summer

The lake was so still it looked like a sheet of glass, and Theo wanted to remember every inch of it. Tomorrow his family would drive back to the city, and in a week he would start at a new middle school where he knew exactly no one.

His cousin Aya swam up beside the dock. "You’ve been staring at that lake for an hour."

"I’m memorizing it," he said. "So I have something good to think about when everything is new and terrible."

Aya climbed up and sat beside him, dripping. "Here’s a secret," she said. "Last summer felt like the end of the world when I changed schools. Then I joined the robotics club and found people who argued about gear ratios as much as I did." She shrugged. "New isn’t the same as terrible."

Theo skipped a stone. It bounced four times before sinking. Maybe, he thought, new things could surprise you too.

1. Why is Theo staring at the lake?
2. What does Aya share with Theo?
3. What does "New isn’t the same as terrible" mean?
