How the school system works
Four systems. England follows the National Curriculum (Key Stages 1–4); Scotland follows Curriculum for Excellence; Wales follows the Curriculum for Wales, organised into six Areas of Learning and Experience; Northern Ireland follows the Northern Ireland Curriculum.
Changes ahead in England. The Curriculum and Assessment Review (final report, November 2025) led the government to plan a revised national curriculum for first teaching in September 2028, shorter total GCSE exam time, scrapping the EBacc measure, a statutory reading test in Year 8 and an entitlement to triple science.
Year names differ. England and Wales use Reception and Years 1–13; Scotland uses P1–P7 and S1–S6; Northern Ireland uses P1–P7 and Years 8–14. Children in Northern Ireland and Scotland usually start P1 at about the age English children start Reception.

Frequently asked questions
Is there one UK curriculum?
No. Education is devolved: the UK Government sets the curriculum for England, and the Scottish Government, Welsh Government and Northern Ireland Executive set their own.
Which year is the same as US Grade 5?
Roughly Year 6 in England and Wales, P7 in Scotland and Northern Ireland. We set the difficulty of every test by age, so each year group gets questions at the right level.
Are these official tests?
All questions and passages are original and written for Pagine to match the published curriculum. Pagine is not affiliated with any government, ministry, department of education, exam board or assessment body. Not official tests.
