Sappho lived on the island of Lesbos and was the most admired lyric poet of ancient Greece; later Greeks called her “the tenth Muse.” Her nine books of songs were lost, and her poems survive mostly as fragments quoted by other writers or found on papyrus. The poems here are Bliss Carman’s 1904 English renderings, which build full lyrics from those fragments.
