A simple GRE study plan

  1. Weeks 1–2

Take a full practice test to find your baseline. Start 25 vocabulary words a week. Review arithmetic, fractions and percents.

  2. Weeks 3–4

Algebra, geometry and data analysis. Daily text-completion sets. Read one long-form article a day.

  3. Weeks 5–6

Timed sections. Keep an error log: why each miss happened. Write two practice Issue essays.

  4. Weeks 7–8

Two more full practice tests under real timing. Review your error log and every word list.

Take Practice Test 1 at the start to find your baseline, one in the middle, and the rest in the final weeks.

Dense, rich prose is the best training for test reading sections.

Frequently asked questions

How many free GRE practice tests are there?

10 full-length tests, each following the official section structure and timing. You can also take any single section.

How long is the GRE?

The GRE General Test takes about 1 hour and 58 minutes: one 30-minute essay, two Verbal Reasoning parts and two Quantitative Reasoning parts.

What is a good GRE score?

It depends on your programs. Check each school’s published averages; many competitive programs report Verbal and Quant scores in the 150s and 160s.

How many GRE words should I learn?

Quality beats quantity. Learning a few hundred high-frequency words well, with example sentences, helps more than memorizing thousands of definitions. Reading widely does the rest.

Is the GRE accepted for business and law school?

Many business schools and a growing number of law schools accept the GRE. Check each program’s admissions page.

How is the practice test scored?

You get a raw score by section and by skill, with an explanation for every question. Official scaled scores come only from the test maker.
