Room 214

Room 214 had been empty since the old science teacher retired, and the sixth graders were sure it was haunted. Lights flickered. A faint tapping came from the walls after school.

Devon did not believe in ghosts, but he did believe in evidence. Armed with a flashlight and a notebook, he stayed late on Tuesday.

At 3:47 the tapping began: tap… tap-tap… tap. Devon followed it to a vent near the floor. He pressed his ear to the metal and heard water gurgling. Behind the wall, the old heating pipes were expanding as the boiler came on, knocking against their brackets.

He wrote his findings in a report titled "The Ghost of Room 214: A Plumbing Mystery." The principal had the pipes fixed, and the next week Room 214 became the new robotics lab.
