The Map in the Attic

The map was folded into a square no bigger than a playing card, tucked inside a book about birds. When Imani spread it on the attic floor, dust rose in a little cloud.

It was hand-drawn: their street, the creek behind the houses and, past the old mill, a small X labeled in her great-grandfather’s neat writing — "What matters most."

Imani and her brother spent Saturday following it. They waded the creek, pushed through blackberry brambles and finally dug beneath a flat stone by the mill. Their shovel hit metal: a tin box, rusted shut.

Inside there was no gold. There were letters — dozens of them — that their great-grandparents had written to each other during the years he worked overseas. Imani read the first one aloud, and her brother, who never sat still, listened until the sun went down.

"I guess he was right," her brother said at last. "This is what matters most."

1. Where did Imani find the map?
2. What did the X on the map say?
3. What did they find in the box?
4. How does the brother’s reaction help show the theme?
Theme: State the theme and explain how it develops over the text.
Answer key: 1) inside a book about birds in the attic · 2) "What matters most." · 3) letters between their great-grandparents · 4) he usually can’t sit still but listens for hours, showing the letters are truly valuable · Theme: Family history and love can be more valuable than riches.
