Tryouts

The list went up at 3:15. I didn’t need to read it twice. My name wasn’t there.

I had practised every morning for two months, shooting free throws in the cold until my fingers went numb. Now I walked past the gym without looking in, like a kid passing a house where something bad had happened.

At home, I threw my ball into the garage so hard it bounced back and hit the lawnmower. My older sister found me sitting on the step. She didn’t say "next year" or "it’s not a big deal." She just sat down and said, "That stinks."

After a while, she nudged me. "Coach Rivera runs a winter league on Saturdays. No tryouts. Want me to drive you?" I didn’t answer right away. But on Saturday, I was the first one in the gym.

1. How does the narrator find out about tryouts?
2. What details show how hard the narrator worked?
3. Why is the sister’s response helpful?
4. What does the last sentence show about the narrator?
Theme: State the theme and explain how it develops over the text.
Answer key: 1) the list is posted and their name is missing · 2) practised every morning for two months in the cold until their fingers went numb · 3) she acknowledges the feeling instead of minimizing it · 4) they choose to keep trying; resilience · Theme: Disappointment can be overcome with support and perseverance.
