Signal Fire (an original myth)

When the gods first made the world, the story goes, people lived in scattered valleys and could not speak to one another across the mountains.

A young shepherd named Ilan noticed that smoke from his campfire could be seen from far away. He built three fires on the highest peak and fed them green branches so they made thick, white smoke.

In the next valley, a girl saw the smoke and answered with three fires of her own. Soon every valley had a fire mountain, and the people invented a language of smoke: one fire for "come," two for "danger," three for "peace."

The gods, it is said, were so pleased that they placed three bright stars in the sky — the Shepherd’s Fires — to remind people that they are never truly alone.

1. What problem did the people face?
2. What did Ilan discover?
