A large passenger jet can weigh more than 400 tons, yet it rises smoothly into the sky. Four forces explain how: lift, weight, thrust and drag.
Weight is the pull of gravity downward. Lift is the upward force created as air flows over and under the curved wings. The wing’s shape and angle make air pressure below the wing greater than the pressure above it, pushing the plane up.
Thrust is the forward push from the engines. Drag is the air resistance that slows the plane down.
To take off, a plane needs enough thrust to overcome drag and enough lift to overcome weight. When the forces are balanced in the air, the plane cruises at a steady speed and height.
