The Mystery of Monarch Migration

Every fall, millions of monarch butterflies fly up to 3,000 miles from Canada and the United States to the mountain forests of central Mexico.

What makes this journey remarkable is that no butterfly makes the round trip. The monarchs that fly south are the great-great-grandchildren of the ones that left Mexico the spring before.

How do they find the way to a place they have never been? Scientists have discovered that monarchs use the position of the Sun, along with an internal clock in their antennae, as a kind of compass. Some research suggests they may also sense Earth’s magnetic field.

Monarch numbers have dropped in recent decades, partly because milkweed — the only plant their caterpillars eat — has disappeared from many areas. Planting milkweed is one way people can help.

1. How far can monarchs travel?
2. Why is the journey remarkable?
3. How do monarchs navigate?

Answer key: 1) up to 3,000 miles · 2) no single butterfly makes the round trip; they go to a place they’ve never been · 3) using the Sun’s position and an internal clock (and possibly Earth’s magnetic field) · 4) milkweed, their caterpillars’ only food, has disappeared from many areas · Central idea: Monarchs make an amazing multi-generation migration using natural navigation, but they need milkweed to survive.
