The Underground Railroad

The Underground Railroad was neither underground nor a railroad. It was a secret network of people and safe places that helped enslaved people escape to freedom in the northern United States and Canada before the Civil War.

Escapes were dangerous. People traveled mostly at night, following the North Star. They hid in barns, cellars and secret rooms in the homes of "conductors" who risked fines and prison to help them.

Harriet Tubman, who escaped slavery herself in 1849, returned to the South about thirteen times and guided around seventy people to freedom. She later said she "never lost a passenger."

The Underground Railroad shows how ordinary people, Black and white, worked together to resist an unjust system.

1. What was the Underground Railroad?
2. Why did people travel at night?
3. What did Harriet Tubman do?
