Coral reefs cover less than one percent of the ocean floor, yet they are home to about a quarter of all ocean species. That is why scientists call them "the rainforests of the sea."
A reef is built by tiny animals called coral polyps. Each polyp builds a hard skeleton of limestone. Over thousands of years, these skeletons pile up into enormous structures.
Many corals depend on algae that live inside them and make food from sunlight. When ocean water becomes too warm, the corals push out the algae and turn white. This is called coral bleaching. If the water stays warm too long, the coral can starve and die.
Scientists are working to protect reefs by reducing pollution, limiting overfishing and even growing young corals in nurseries and replanting them.
