Storm Night

The lights flickered, then went out. Thunder rolled across the sky like a giant bowling ball.

Leo pulled his blanket over his head. "I don’t like storms," he whispered.

Mom lit a candle and opened a book. "Let’s count the seconds between the flash and the boom," she said. "If the number gets bigger, the storm is moving away."

Flash. One, two, three… BOOM. Flash. One, two, three, four, five, six… boom. Leo grinned. "It’s leaving!" By the time the story ended, the thunder was only a soft grumble far away.
