The Kite That Would Not Fly

Rosa built a kite from newspaper, sticks and string. She painted a bright orange sun on it and carried it proudly to the park.

She ran as fast as she could, but the kite bumped along the grass like a tired turtle. Her brother laughed. "Maybe it is too heavy," he said.

Rosa sat on a bench and frowned. Then she noticed the leaves on the trees. They were perfectly still. "It isn’t the kite," she said slowly. "There’s no wind."

The next afternoon, the trees were swaying and whispering. Rosa raced to the park, and her orange sun climbed higher and higher into the sky.
