Read the story. Then answer using details from the text.

Inventory

After the fire, the insurance adjuster gave us a form: "List all items lost, with estimated value."

My mother sat at the borrowed kitchen table and began. Sofa. Television. Dishwasher. Those were easy. Then she stopped writing.

"How do I list the height marks on the pantry door?" she asked, not really to me. "The quilt my mother finished the week before she died? The drawer of your baby teeth?"

I didn’t have an answer. That night I made my own list on the back of the form. It had no prices. At the bottom, I wrote: "Still here: Mom. Me. The dog. The recipe for Sunday pancakes, which Mom knows by heart." I left it on the table where she would find it in the morning.

1. What form does the family receive?
2. Why does the mother stop writing?
3. What is on the narrator’s list?
4. How does the narrator’s list respond to the insurance form?
Theme: State the theme and explain how it develops over the text.
Answer key: 1) an insurance form to list lost items and their value · 2) many of the most precious things have no price · 3) what remains: family, the dog, a cherished recipe · 4) it values what can’t be measured in money, offering comfort · Theme: What matters most can’t be measured in money.
