Read the story. Then answer using details from the text.

The Debate

Malik had prepared for weeks to argue that cities should ban cars from downtown. He had charts, statistics and a closing line he’d practised in the mirror.

His opponent, a quiet girl named Ines, stood up and did something he hadn’t expected: she agreed with half of his case. "Malik is right that cars pollute and crowd our streets," she said. "But his plan forgets the people who can’t walk far — the elderly, the disabled, the parent with three kids and groceries."

Malik felt his carefully built argument tilt beneath him. He’d been so sure he was right that he had never imagined who might be left out.

He lost the round. Afterward, he found Ines in the hallway. "How did you think of that?" he asked. She shrugged. "My grandmother uses a wheelchair. You argue better about things you’ve lived."

1. What position did Malik argue?
2. What strategy did Ines use?
3. What realization does Malik have?
4. What does Ines’s last line suggest about argument?
Theme: State the theme and explain how it develops over the text.
Answer key: 1) banning cars from downtown · 2) she conceded part of his argument, then showed who his plan would leave out · 3) his certainty kept him from considering people affected by his plan · 4) personal experience gives insight and strengthens arguments · Theme: Strong arguments consider those who might be affected and acknowledge other perspectives.
