Read the story. Then answer using details from the text.

The Interpreter

At nine, Hoa became her family’s voice. She translated at the bank, at the doctor’s office, at parent–teacher conferences where she had to explain her own report card. She learned words like "deductible" and "lease" before she learned to ride a bike.

At fifteen, she resented it. Her friends spent Saturdays at the mall; she spent them on the phone with the electric company, her father leaning close, nodding at sounds he couldn’t yet follow.

Then, in March, her father passed his citizenship interview. She waited outside, ready to be called in, but no one called. He came out holding a small flag, his face bright. "I answered by myself," he said in careful English. "Every question."

On the drive home he insisted on calling the electric company. Hoa sat in the passenger seat, listening to him spell their last name, slowly and correctly, to a stranger. She looked out the window so he wouldn’t see her cry, and she was not sure whether she was crying because she was proud of him or because some part of her was no longer needed.

1. What role did Hoa take on as a child?
2. How do her feelings change from nine to fifteen?
3. What event marks a turning point?
4. Explain the complex emotion in the final sentence.
Theme: State the theme and explain how it develops over the text.
Answer key: 1) translator for her family · 2) she grows resentful of the responsibility · 3) her father passes his citizenship interview speaking English by himself · 4) pride in her father mixed with a sense of loss at no longer being needed · Theme: Growing independence in a family can bring both pride and loss.
