The Silk Road

The Silk Road was not a single road but a network of trade routes linking China with Central Asia, the Middle East and the Mediterranean world for more than a thousand years.

Silk from China was prized in Rome, but goods flowed in every direction: spices, glass, horses, paper, gold and porcelain. Few merchants traveled the whole distance; goods passed from trader to trader along the way.

Ideas traveled too. Buddhism spread from India into China along these routes, and technologies such as papermaking moved westward. Unfortunately, so did disease: historians believe the Black Death spread along trade routes in the 1300s.

The Silk Road shows that globalization β€” the connection of distant peoples through trade and ideas β€” is not a modern invention.
