The Harlem Renaissance

In the 1920s, the Harlem neighborhood of New York City became the center of an explosion of African American art, music and literature known as the Harlem Renaissance.

Many of its artists had moved north during the Great Migration, when large numbers of Black Americans left the rural South for cities in search of jobs and greater freedom.

Writers such as Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston celebrated Black life and culture. Jazz musicians such as Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong performed in famous clubs and changed American music.

The Harlem Renaissance challenged racist stereotypes and showed the depth and richness of African American culture. Its influence can still be heard and read today.
