Trace the argument. Evaluate the reasoning and evidence.
Between Hawaii and California lies an area of the ocean where currents swirl in a giant circle called a gyre. Plastic carried by those currents collects there, forming what is known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
Contrary to popular belief, the patch is not a solid island of trash you could walk on. Much of it is made up of tiny pieces called microplastics, created as larger plastics break down in sunlight and waves. In many places the water looks almost clear.
Microplastics are a serious problem because fish and seabirds mistake them for food. The plastics can harm the animals and may move up the food chain.
Cleanup projects are testing ways to collect larger debris, but scientists agree the most effective solution is to stop plastic from reaching the ocean in the first place.
