Trace the argument. Evaluate the reasoning and evidence.

The Science of Sleep

Sleep may look like doing nothing, but the brain is busy. During sleep, the brain sorts and stores memories from the day, which is one reason a good night’s sleep helps learning.

Sleep happens in cycles of about 90 minutes. Each cycle includes light sleep, deep sleep and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, when most vivid dreams occur.

Health experts recommend that children aged 6 to 12 get 9 to 12 hours of sleep a night, and teenagers 8 to 10 hours. Yet many students get far less.

Screens can make the problem worse. The blue light from phones and tablets can signal the brain to stay awake. Experts suggest putting devices away at least an hour before bed.
