Coyote and the Sun (an original trickster tale)

Long ago, the people say, the world was dark and cold because the Sun was kept in a box by a greedy chief who would not share it.

Clever Coyote decided to help. He pretended to be a harmless old dog and lay beside the chief’s fire. When the guards fell asleep, he grabbed the box in his teeth and ran.

The chief’s warriors chased him across the mountains. Just as they were about to catch him, Coyote tossed the box high into the sky. It burst open, and the Sun rose up and stayed there, warming the whole world.

Ever since, the story says, the Sun has belonged to everyone.
