The Science Fair Rival

Jamal had planned his solar oven for weeks. So when he saw Priya carrying a cardboard box lined with foil into the gym, his stomach dropped. "She copied my idea," he muttered.

All morning he refused to look at her table. But when the judges stopped at Priya’s project, he heard her explain something he hadn’t thought of: she had painted the inside of the lid black to soak up more heat.

After the judging, Jamal walked over. "Your oven is better than mine," he admitted. "Can I see how you did the lid?"

Priya laughed. "Only if you show me how you got yours to tilt toward the sun." By the end of the day, they were sketching a new oven together for next year.
