Lost in the Corn Maze

"Stay together," Mom had said. But I had chased a butterfly around one corner, then another, and now the tall corn walls all looked the same.

My heart thumped like a drum. I wanted to run, but then I remembered what my grandmother told me about being lost: stop, stay calm and use what you know.

I looked up. The sun was low in the sky, which meant it was setting in the west. The entrance had faced the parking lot, and the parking lot faced the sunset. I turned toward the orange glow and walked, keeping my right hand on the corn wall.

Ten minutes later, I stepped out right next to the hot cider stand — and right into Mom’s arms.
