Why Leaves Change Color

In spring and summer, leaves are green because they are full of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll helps a tree use sunlight to make food.

In fall, the days get shorter and cooler. Trees stop making chlorophyll, and the green color fades.

Then other colors that were hiding in the leaf, such as yellow and orange, can be seen. Some trees also make red colors in the fall.

Finally, many trees drop their leaves to save water and energy for winter.

1. What makes leaves green?
