The First Libraries

Long before printed books, people wrote on clay tablets, animal skins and scrolls. Collections of these writings were the first libraries.

One famous library was in Alexandria, Egypt, more than 2,000 years ago. Scholars there tried to collect a copy of every important scroll they could find.

Today, public libraries lend books for free. Many also offer computers, story times and quiet places to study. A library card is a ticket to millions of ideas.
