Honeybees Work as a Team

A honeybee colony can have tens of thousands of bees, and each bee has a job.

The queen bee lays the eggs. Worker bees, which are all female, clean the hive, care for young bees, build wax comb and gather food. Drones are male bees whose main job is to mate with a queen.

Worker bees collect nectar and pollen from flowers. Back at the hive, they turn the nectar into honey and store it in wax cells for the winter.

Because every bee does its part, the colony can survive cold winters that one bee alone could not.

1. What is the queen bee’s job?
