The Great Migration

Between about 1910 and 1970, roughly six million Black Americans left the rural South for cities in the North, Midwest and West. Historians call this the Great Migration.

People left to escape racial violence and segregation under Jim Crow laws and to seek jobs in growing industries, especially during the two World Wars, when factories needed workers.

The migration transformed American cities and culture. It shaped the Harlem Renaissance, Chicago blues and the growth of Black political power in Northern cities. It also met resistance: migrants faced discrimination in housing and employment, including practices such as redlining.

Writer Isabel Wilkerson has described the Great Migration as one of the largest internal migrations in American history, comparable in its effects to waves of immigration from abroad.
