How to Run a Class or School Spelling Bee

Roles, rules, a pronouncer script and free printables: everything for a smooth, fun bee.

Who you need

The rules

  1. Spellers say the word, spell it, then say the word again.

  2. A speller may ask for the word to be repeated, used in a sentence, defined, or for its part of speech or origin.

  3. Once a letter is said, it cannot be changed. Spellers may start over, but only with the same letters in the same order so far.

  4. A misspelled word means the speller sits down; the next speller gets a new word.

  5. When only two spellers remain, if one misses, the other must spell that word correctly plus one more to win.

  6. Use words from a list everyone could study, usually the grade list for the youngest speller.

Pronouncer script

  1. Speller, your word is “[word].”

  2. “[word].” Here it is in a sentence: “[sentence].”

  3. It means: [meaning].

  4. Please say the word, spell it, and say it again.

  5. If correct: “That is correct.” If not: “I’m sorry, that is incorrect. The correct spelling is …” Thank the speller either way.

Each grade page lists 15 words to know with a meaning and a sentence, ready for the pronouncer.

Frequently asked questions

How many words do I need for a class spelling bee?

Plan about five words per speller, plus spares. A class of 25 needs around 125 words; one grade page has more than enough.

How do you break a tie?

When two spellers remain, if one misses, the other must spell that word plus one more correctly to win. If both miss in the same round, both stay in and the round continues.

What age can children do a spelling bee?

From first grade with short, familiar words. Keep early bees friendly: practice rounds, a gentle pronouncer and a prize for everyone who takes part.
