Frequently asked questions

What are sight words?

Sight words are the most common words in English, like the, said and because. Many do not follow regular phonics patterns, so children learn to recognise and spell them instantly.

What is the difference between Dolch and Fry words?

Both are lists of high-frequency words. The Dolch lists are grouped by grade, from pre-primer to third grade. The Fry list ranks the most common words in reading, in groups of 100; our fourth-grade set comes from its fourth hundred.

How should my child practise sight words?

Read the word, say it, spell it aloud, then write it. Five new words a day is plenty. Flash cards, bingo and the online exercise make practice feel like a game.

When should children know their sight words?

Most children learn the pre-primer and primer words in kindergarten, then a new set each year to third grade. Every child is different; keep it fun and steady.
