“Let’s have a leaf race!” said Ada. Each of them picked a leaf and held it high. When the wind blew, they let go. Ada’s leaf spun in circles. Sam’s leaf zigzagged over the fence.
They chased the leaves past the apple tree, where a squirrel was busy burying acorns. “He’s getting ready for winter,” said Ada. “Squirrels hide food so they have something to eat when it snows.”
Sam’s leaf landed first, on top of a pumpkin by the gate. “I win!” he shouted. Ada laughed. Then they raked all the fallen leaves into one enormous pile — and jumped right in.
