“Look!” said Grandpa. “The harvest moon is rising.” It was huge and orange, peeping over the hills.
Nia packed a basket: apple slices, warm corn bread and a flask of cocoa for everyone.
They spread a blanket at the edge of the field, where the farmers had gathered the crops that day.
“Long ago,” said Grandpa, “farmers worked late into the night. The bright full moon helped them see to bring in the harvest.”
An owl hooted. A fox trotted by. The moon climbed higher and turned silver-white.
“What are you thankful for?” asked Mum. Nia thought hard. “Cocoa. Grandpa’s stories. And this moon.”
They walked home by moonlight, no torch needed at all.
