  • Writing: plan, revise, research W · about 9 questions — Includes 1 hand-scored short written response (up to 3 points). Language & writing questions use a draft of a student’s essay to revise and edit.

Every math test includes three argumentation and three modeling tasks (four each in grade 9), with two hand-scored constructed responses — explain your reasoning and show your model.

Alaska Reads Act screener (mCLASS DIBELS 8) — 4 tested areas · 19 resources

Under the Alaska Reads Act, every K–3 student is screened three times a year with mCLASS DIBELS 8th Edition. Each measure takes 1–3 minutes. Students below the benchmark get extra reading support — the goal is reading at grade level by the end of 3rd grade.

When: Fall, winter and spring — short one-to-one checks with a teacher

What’s tested

  • Nonsense Word Fluency (NWF) 1 min — Reads made-up words like “vab” to show phonics decoding.
  • Word Reading Fluency (WRF) 1 min — Reads real, common words — including sight words.
  • Oral Reading Fluency (ORF) 1 min — Reads a grade-level passage aloud; scored in words correct per minute and accuracy.
  • Maze (comprehension) 3 min — Silent reading: choose the word that makes sense in each sentence.
