How the school system works

The national curriculum is developed by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC). A revised basic education curriculum is being introduced, and the Federal Government has proposed a 12-year uninterrupted basic education model that would remove the exam barrier between JSS and SSS; the BECE still took place in 2026. WAEC and NECO are moving their exams to computer-based testing.

Early childhood (nursery) classes, Primary 1–6, Junior Secondary School (JSS 1–3) and Senior Secondary School (SSS 1–3). Senior students choose science, arts/humanities, commercial or technical subject combinations.

Finishing school: Most students finish with the WASSCE (WAEC) or SSCE (NECO). University admission usually requires five credits, including English and Mathematics, plus a JAMB UTME score.
