What is the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE)?
English Studies, Mathematics, Basic Science and Technology, social and civic subjects, a Nigerian language and others. April–June of JSS 3 (NECO’s 2026 BECE ran 20–30 April). Required to progress to senior secondary school (a proposed 12-year basic education model would phase it out).
What is the format?
Objective and theory papers. NECO conducts the BECE for Federal Unity Colleges and some private schools; state examination boards run it for state schools.
How should students prepare?
Take one practice test to find strengths and gaps, review the skill breakdown, practise the weaker skills, then try another test a week later. Read every day and talk about what you read.
