Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration of African American and Pan-African family, community and culture, held every year from 26 December to 1 January. It was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, and its name comes from the Swahili for βfirst fruits.β Each day honours one of the seven principles (Nguzo Saba): Umoja (unity), Kujichagulia (self-determination), Ujima (collective work), Ujamaa (cooperative economics), Nia (purpose), Kuumba (creativity) and Imani (faith). Each evening families light one more candle on the kinara β one black, three red, three green β and on 31 December many share a feast, the karamu. Kwanzaa is cultural, not religious.

Kwanzaaβs seven days line up perfectly with a reading ritual: each evening, light the next candle on the kinara, talk about that dayβs principle, and share a story. Our Kwanzaa principles & symbols printable explains the Nguzo Saba simply for children, the writing prompts give two ideas for each principle, and the Kwanzaa reading list suggests a book for each day. Storytelling is part of many Kwanzaa celebrations, so weβve gathered African folk tales and Anansi stories you can read free in Pagine.
Track every book your child reads over the winter break in the free Pagine app, and find more December reading in our winter stories collection.
