Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration of African American and Pan-African family, community and culture. It is held every year from 26 December to 1 January. It was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga.
The name comes from the Swahili words “matunda ya kwanza,” which mean “first fruits” of the harvest. Kwanzaa is a cultural celebration, not a religious one, so families of many faiths enjoy it.
Each of the seven days honours one of the seven principles, called the Nguzo Saba. They are unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith.
Each evening, families light one more candle on the kinara: one black, three red and three green. They talk about the day’s principle, share stories and music, and on 31 December many enjoy a big feast called the karamu. Children often receive handmade gifts or books, called zawadi.
