How the school system works

National framework, state delivery. ACARA writes the Australian Curriculum and runs NAPLAN. States and territories run schools, adapt the curriculum and award senior certificates. Queensland, WA, SA, Tasmania, the ACT and the NT teach Australian Curriculum v9 (WA through its own WA Curriculum); NSW teaches NESA syllabuses and Victoria the Victorian Curriculum F–10 Version 2.0 (mandatory from 2026).

NAPLAN tests every student in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 in reading, writing, conventions of language and numeracy each March, online except the Year 3 writing test. Results are reported at four proficiency levels: Exceeding, Strong, Developing and Needs additional support.

Senior years. Each state awards its own certificate (HSC, VCE, QCE, WACE, SACE, TCE, ACT SSC, NTCET). Most students aiming for university also receive an ATAR, a rank used for admission.

Frequently asked questions

Does Australia have a national curriculum?

Yes — the Australian Curriculum (now version 9.0) sets what students learn from Foundation to Year 10 in eight learning areas. States and territories implement it; NSW and Victoria publish their own versions based on it. Senior years (11–12) are set by each state’s curriculum authority.

What is the first year of school called?

It depends on the state: Kindergarten (NSW, ACT), Prep (Victoria, Queensland, Tasmania), Pre-primary (WA), Reception (SA) and Transition (NT). We use your state’s name on every page.

When is NAPLAN?

NAPLAN runs over about two weeks in March for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. In 2026 the window was 11–23 March, starting with the writing test.

Are these official tests?

All questions and passages are original and written for Pagine to match the published curriculum. Pagine is not affiliated with any government, ministry, department of education, exam board or assessment body. Not official tests.
