A volcano is an opening in the Earth's crust.

Deep underground, rock is so hot it melts. This melted rock is called magma.

When magma comes out of a volcano, it is called lava.

Lava cools and turns into hard rock.

Over a long time, volcanoes can build mountains and even islands, like Hawaii.
