Read closely. Think about how the author wrote it.

Antibiotic Resistance

Since penicillin came into wide use in the 1940s, antibiotics have saved millions of lives by killing bacteria that cause infections.

But bacteria evolve. When an antibiotic is used, most bacteria die, but a few may survive because of genetic differences. Those survivors multiply, passing on their resistance. Over time, the antibiotic becomes less effective.

Overuse speeds this process. Taking antibiotics for viral illnesses such as colds, which antibiotics cannot treat, and using antibiotics routinely in livestock both give bacteria more chances to develop resistance.

Health organizations warn that resistant infections are a serious global threat. They urge people to use antibiotics only when prescribed, to take the full course as directed and to support research into new treatments.

Vocabulary: resistance — determine its meaning from context: ________________

1. Analyze how the author structures the text. How does each section contribute to the whole?
2. Determine the author’s purpose and point of view. How does the author address other viewpoints?
3. Analyze the meaning and effect of a key word or phrase.
4. Evaluate whether the structure makes the ideas clear and convincing.
Answer key: structure: cause and effect, then solution; purpose: to explain and warn · resistance = the ability to withstand something
