Trace the argument. Evaluate the reasoning and evidence.
On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite to orbit Earth. The beeping metal sphere, about the size of a beach ball, alarmed many Americans, who feared falling behind their Cold War rival in science and technology.
The United States responded by creating NASA in 1958 and investing heavily in science education. The Soviets achieved another first in 1961, when Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space.
That same year, President John F. Kennedy challenged the nation to land a person on the Moon before the end of the decade. On July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the lunar surface.
The Space Race produced technologies used today, from satellite communications to advances in computing, and it eventually gave way to cooperation, including the International Space Station.
