The Bridge

For forty years, the two villages on either side of the gorge had not spoken. Nobody remembered exactly why. Some said it began with a stolen goat; others, with a broken wedding promise.

When the spring floods washed away the only road to the market town, both villages faced the same problem: their crops would rot unless they could reach buyers. The shortest route was across the gorge β€” but there was no bridge, and neither village could build one alone.

Old Yusuf from the east village and Old Mirela from the west met at the edge of the gorge. They stood a long time, not speaking. Finally Mirela said, "My people have rope." Yusuf nodded. "Mine have timber."

By midsummer, a swaying bridge spanned the gorge. Carts crossed it every market day β€” and, soon after, so did wedding guests.
