The Weight of Snow

On the night of the blizzard, Sam’s little sister didn’t come home from her friend’s house. The phones were down. The snow came sideways, erasing the road.

Sam took the old sled and a lantern and pushed into the white. Every step sank to his knees. He shouted her name, but the wind tore the word apart before it left his mouth.

Halfway there, he found her β€” huddled in the bus shelter with her friend’s mother, who had tried to walk her home and been forced to stop.

He pulled them both home on the sled, one slow step at a time. Later, wrapped in blankets, his sister fell asleep against his shoulder. Sam stayed awake, listening to the house creak under the weight of snow, and thought that he had never felt so tired or so strong.

Vocabulary: huddled β€” determine its meaning from context: ________________

1. Identify the point of view. How does it shape what the reader knows?

3. How does the structure (order of events, pacing, turning point) contribute to the meaning?
4. Analyze how a specific word choice affects tone.
Answer key: third person limited (Sam); device: personification: "the wind tore the word apart"; paradox: "so tired or so strong"; structure: suspense and resolution Β· huddled = crowded close together for warmth or safety
