Why We Need Bees (and Not Just for Honey)

About one in every three bites of food we eat depends on pollinators such as bees. Crops like almonds, apples, blueberries and cucumbers rely on insects to carry pollen from flower to flower.

In recent decades, many beekeepers have reported large losses of their colonies. Scientists point to several causes working together: parasites such as the varroa mite, pesticides, loss of wildflower habitat and poor nutrition.

Native bees face pressure too. North America has thousands of native bee species, many of which nest in the ground and are harmed when natural areas are paved over.

Individuals can help by planting native flowers, avoiding pesticides and leaving some bare ground or dead stems for nesting.

Vocabulary: habitat — determine its meaning from context: ________________

1. Analyze how the author structures the text. How does each section contribute to the whole?
2. Determine the author’s purpose and point of view. How does the author address other viewpoints?
3. Analyze the meaning and effect of a key word or phrase.
4. Evaluate whether the structure makes the ideas clear and convincing.
Answer key: structure: problem–solution; purpose: to inform and persuade readers to act; statistic in the opening · habitat = the natural home of a plant or animal
